Tree Risk Assessment "TRAQ"

TRAQ Matters

  • Ensures standardized, defendable evaluations
  • Reduces liability for homeowners, HOAs, municipalities, and businesses
  • Helps prioritize tree work based on safety, not guesswork
  • Provides documentation if removal is challenged or if insurance is involved

Tree Risk Assessment involves our arborist, Charles Frazier, getting a detailed ground-level inspection of the tree and its surroundings. He then begins by evaluating site conditions, including soil quality, drainage and water flow patterns, available root space, and any potential targets such as people, buildings, vehicles, or walkways that could be impacted if the tree or a limb were to fall.

The tree’s structure and overall health are then closely examined for visible concerns like cracks, cavities, decay, weak branch unions, deadwood, insect or disease activity, and the effects of past pruning. The root system is assessed for stability by looking for soil heaving, compromised root plates, girdling roots, or signs of construction or soil disturbance that may damage or restrict root growth. Finally, the arborist considers the tree’s history, including previous pruning practices, storm-related impacts, and any nearby construction that may have influenced the tree’s structural integrity or long-term health.

A TRAQ report evaluates 3 things:

  • Likelihood of failure (Will something break or fall?)
  • Likelihood of impact (Is there a target below?)
  • Consequences of failure (What damage could occur?)

The result is a risk rating such as low, moderate, high, or extreme. A written TRAQ report usually follows and includes:

  • Tree species, size, and condition
  • Photos of defects or concerns
  • Risk rating (low, moderate, high, or extreme)
  • Recommended actions with timelines such as pruning, fertilizing, removal, or restricting access.
